ST. GEORGE — The baseball team at Crimson Cliffs High School controls its own destiny entering the final week of the regular season.

If the Mustangs (9-1 in Region 10) sweep a home-and-home series with Hurricane this week, Crimson Cliffs will win the region crown.

Snow Canyon (10-2, 20-4 overall) completed its region slate already and will play a non-region game against national powerhouse Bishop Gorman (25-2) in Las Vegas Tuesday night, May 2.

Following are recaps of last week’s Region 10 baseball games, starting with games Friday, April 28.

Desert Hills 16, Pine View 4

The Thunder erupted for a five-run fifth inning and never looked back in a rout at Pine View.

Four of the Thunder’s 13 total hits in the win were home runs. Haigen Reed, Landon Musgrave, Kyler Terry and Seth Wells all went yard for Desert Hills and accounted for seven RBI.

Reed, Musgrave, Beau Wall and Cooper Cluff scored three runs apiece and Seth Wells had two hits and two RBI for the winners.

Tytan Tate pitched the win for Desert Hills, going five full innings. He yielded four hits and three runs while walking two. Tate struck out seven Panthers.

Pine View was led by the big bat of Pedro Duarte, who collected two hits including a triple and three RBI. Kyson Milne contributed a hit and an RBI in Pine View’s cause.

Duarte, Aden Mace and Carson Archibald all pitched for Pine View, giving up a combined 12 hits in the setback.

Cedar 22, Hurricane 16

A football game broke out in Hurricane after the Reds scored a touchdown in the top of the first. Only four of the 14 half-innings went scoreless and the teams combined for 25 hits and 38 runs.

The Tigers did not help their own cause at home committing six errors in the contest.

Four Reds worked the hill in the game: Krew Giles, Jaxon Burgess, Colter Bunnell and Quaid Mackert. Burgess struck out nine Tigers and picked up the win.

Meanwhile, five hurlers pitched for Hurricane: Landon Stewart, McCauley Brycen, Manny Santos, Anthony Guzman and Sam Johanson. They combined to yield 15 Cedar hits.

Senior Caden Rosenburg paced the Reds at the plate, finishing with four hits and four RBI. Krew Giles also hit four times and collected three RBI while Bunnell homered and drove in two for the winners. Mackert smacked three hits, all doubles, for Cedar.

Hurricane responded with Sam Johanson’s five RBI. He hit three times, including a double and a triple, and scored three runs in the loss.

Brycen tripled and drove in two for the Tigers and Casen Robinson finished with a knock and two RBI. Caleb Pearson contributed a double and two RBI for Hurricane’s cause.

Cedar 8, Hurricane 7

Cedar broke a 7-7 tie that had stood since the fourth inning with a game-winning sacrifice fly by Koden Lunt in the bottom of the ninth.

Hurricane put up two runs in the top of the first, but Cedar answered with a four-run rally in the bottom of the first, as Colter Bunnell’s two-run double got things going.

Cedar struggled defensively in the top of the second. The Tigers belted three hits and capitalized on two fielding errors to retake the lead, 6-4.

Hurricane tacked on another run in the top of the fourth, with Brigham Stayley advancing to home on a throwing error while he was stealing third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cedar put together a two-out rally that was capped off by a bases-clearing double to center field by Bunnell, tying the game 7-7.

Both teams’ bats quieted down considerably after that, as neither team scored over the next four innings.

In the top of the ninth, Cedar relief pitcher Krew Giles faced just three Tiger batters, striking out the first and third and picking the middle one off first base after walking him.

Giles then got things started in the bottom of the ninth with a one-out single. That was followed by a single by Kyler Callister, who advanced to second on the throw from center field. The next batter was intentionally walked, which loaded the bases.

That set the stage for Lunt’s game-winning sacrifice fly to center, scoring Giles.

Lunt pitched the first seven innings for Cedar before being relieved in the top of the eighth by Giles, who picked up the victory. Taking the loss on the mound was Hurricane’s Sam Johanson, who threw the final two and one-third innings for the Tigers.

Cedar finished with 14 hits, more than double Hurricane’s total of six hits.

Meanwhile, Beau Wall had two hits to lead Desert Hills in the setback. Haigen Reid collected two RBI and senior Corbin Thompson recorded one RBI for the Thunder.

Jace Fillmore’s double was the only extra-base hit in the game among the Thunder’s seven total knocks.

Senior Nash Schroeder almost pitched a complete game for the Panthers win, throwing 6.2 innings before Aden Mace came on to retire the final Thunder batter.

Schroeder allowed five hits, walked four and struck out six for the Pine View win.

Landon Musgrave pitched 4.1 innings for Desert Hills and yielded eight hits. Four of the eight runs charged against him were unearned and Musgrave walked two and struck out seven in the setback.

The teams combined for 14 hits in a well-pitched contest.
