Just before new traffic lights become operational, Cedar City intersection sees another crash

CEDAR CITY — Two cars collided Thursday at the intersection of Kitty Hawk Drive and Airport Road in Cedar City.

The incident occurred shortly before noon and involved a gray Hyundai Sonata and a white Chevrolet Impala.

According to Cedar City Police, the driver of the Hyundai had been heading westbound across the intersection when the car was struck on the rear passenger side by the southbound Impala, which had the right of way.

The impact sent the two vehicles into opposite corners of the intersection, with the Impala crashing into a newly installed post for a crosswalk button in the southwest corner and the Hyundai ending up in the northeast corner after having been spun around in the collision.

One of the cars also made incidental contact with a pickup truck that was stationary but pointing east, causing minor cosmetic damage to that third vehicle.

No serious injuries were reported. A Gold Cross ambulance crew responded to the scene but did not take anyone to the hospital, police said.

Both the Hyundai and the Impala sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.

The driver of the Hyundai received a citation for failing to obey a traffic sign, according to police.

The intersection, which is no stranger to collisions, is just days away from being controlled by a new traffic light system, complete with green turn arrows and timed pedestrian crossings.

As previously reported, the project was given the green light, so to speak, by Cedar City officials last summer, with the Cedar City Council allocating $350,000 in funding.

City officials told Cedar City News that the new traffic lights are expected to become operational either this weekend or early next week as soon as the power connections and other installation procedures are finalized.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
