CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — As the only women’s professional golf event in Utah, the third annual Copper Rock Championship, set for April 27-29, is committed to making an impact in the community and elevating women in both sports and business.

“We wish to use our platform of a professional golf tournament to raise awareness and funds for worthy causes,” said Penny James-Garcia, the tournament’s volunteer and event coordinator. “We’re leading by example.”

Along these lines, the Copper Rock Championship will once again donate $50,000 to the Women’s Leadership Institute, the tournament’s exclusive charity partner since its inception. Founded in 2015 by a group of key business leaders, this Utah-based nonprofit created the ElevateHER Company Challenge to educate corporations throughout the state on the value of gender diversity.

“Our mission is to raise the stature of women’s leadership in business and in politics,” Women’s Leadership Institute CEO Pat Jones said. “Golf is the language of business, and women ought to be part of that conversation.”

The tournament will also host a pro-am event and a business luncheon during championship week in support of the Women’s Leadership Institute.

“We’re pleased with their mission to elevate women in business and leadership,” Garcia said. “Elevating women is in step with our championship, which provides a platform for talented female athletes.”

Additionally, the Copper Rock Championship has launched a new fundraising initiative this year to benefit Switchpoint, which addresses poverty and homelessness in Southern Utah by creating a comprehensive plan to support families on their journey to self-sufficiency. The organization operates an emergency shelter, food pantry, soup kitchen and 24/7 child care facility, along with providing referrals for affordable housing and other services.

“Switchpoint is well deserving of being our first ‘Birdies Fore’ recipient,” Garcia said. “It’s an incredible organization with a mission to be the instrument to help change lives.”

Birdies Fore Switchpoint asks individuals to pledge $2 per birdie on holes 9 and 18 and $1 per birdie on all other holes, while businesses are challenged to donate $5 per birdie on holes 9 and 18 and $10 per birdie on the remaining holes.

The tournament averages 700 birdies. This year’s goal is to raise at least $20,000, and 100% of the money pledged will go directly to Switchpoint. Click here to take the pledge.

“These funds are vital to the success of Switchpoint,” development director Linda Stay said. “Case management is the reason we’re having such an incredible impact and actually solving homelessness for people in our community.”
