Region 10 softball: Crimson Cliffs takes two from Pine View; Warriors, Thunder rumble on

WASHINGTON — The softball team at Crimson Cliffs High School capped off its week with a 12-2 home victory over Pine View Friday night in Washington Fields.

“We had a good week of practice and they were seeing the ball really well tonight,” Mustangs coach Marshall Asklind told St. George News after the game ended in the bottom of the sixth.

“We started off really strong and got a little quiet there for an inning or two, and then we were able to come back. It was good to see that,” Asklind added.

Sophomore pitcher Gracie Stucki threw three innings for Crimson, yielding two runs off of four hits. She walked no batters and struck out five Panthers in the win.

Mustangs senior McKenna Cahoon shut the door on Pine View in her three innings of work, giving up no runs and only two hits. The hard throwing right-hander walked two and struck out one.

“McKenna is doing a great job. She has great leadership skills,” Asklind said, noting that he pulled Cahoon out of the game to work on some minor adjustments before putting her back in.

“She came out with even more intensity than she started with,” he added. “So that was very exciting. She’s definitely one of our leaders.”

Crimson struck for nine runs in the first two frames to quickly put the game out of reach for Pine View.

The highlight of Crimson’s second inning was a three-run moonshot home run by Paisley Lantz. The junior slugger smacked another homer in the sixth and finished with five RBI in the win.

Junior Abbey Morris also swatted a home run for Crimson, which churned out nine hits in the game. Senior Riley Askand had a hit, two RBI and scored three times for the Mustangs.

Crimson evened its Region 10 record at 4-4 after the win and is 8-7 overall.

The Mustangs played Region 10 front-runners Snow Canyon (two 2-1 defeats) and Desert Hills (two high-scoring losses) well in their first meetings and have reason to believe they’ll be ready to face them again come playoff time.

“I think Snow Canyon was a really good series, we had our chances, we’re young,” coach Askind said. “Desert Hills is a quality team. They showed up and took care of business, but come playoff time I think we’re going to see a different result.”

The series opener at Pine View on Tuesday was much like Friday night’s game.

Paisley Lantz homered for Crimson while Abbey Morris collected three hits and two RBI in the victory. Cahoon and Alexis Bang recorded an RBI apiece for the Mustangs as well.

Cedar took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Haylee Campbell belted a home run that scored Marley Geddes, who’d walked to lead off.

Snow Canyon then answered with a two-run homer of its own in the second inning, with Chandler Beck going yard to plate Kennadi Gates. The Warriors picked up two more runs in the top of the third to go up 4-2.

Cedar’s Campbell then drilled a solo homer in the bottom of that inning to make it 4-3. But that was the last time the Reds would cross the plate, as it was all Warriors the rest of the way.

Nine different players ended up getting multiple hits for Snow Canyon, including pitcher Avery Thorkelson, who went 5-for-5 at the plate with a homer and two RBI, while Gates, who batted next in the lineup, ended up 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBI.

Meanwhile, Cedar managed just four hits during the contest, including Campbell’s two homers. The Reds also committed five errors in the field, while the Warriors had zero.

Thorkelson pitched the first five innings to picked up the W in the circle, while Cedar’s Sadie Parson also pitched five innings and took the loss.
