Region 10 baseball: Mustangs, Warriors, Flyers all unbeaten as teams navigate waterlogged schedules

ST. GEORGE — Region 10 baseball games were fast and furious last week as local teams scrambled their schedules to accommodate Mother Nature.

The Cedar Reds played home games in St. George while their soggy ball field dried out after snow and rain saturated Cedar City for much of March.

Other Region 10 games were canceled and rescheduled.

Uncertain weather causes missed practices and disrupted games which lead to lopsided scores.

For example, the results from Region 10 contests on Tuesday, March 28: Crimson Cliffs 16, Cedar 0; Snow Canyon 16, Pine View 4; Desert Hills 21, Hurricane 4.

St. George News asked Crimson Cliffs head coach Justin Abbott if March’s bad weather played a part in the blowout games.

“When you can’t get outside and take ground balls and take live BP (batting practice) and see fly balls and react to live game situations, it definitely makes a difference,” Abbott said. “So, does that change things? Yeah, I think a little bit.”

Crimson Cliffs’ right-hander Aaron Morris sailed through three innings of no-hit ball for the win.

“Aaron’s a competitor,” Abbott said. “He puts us in a good position all the time. I love what he does on the mound.”

Dean Berrett recorded a homer and six RBI for Crimson Cliffs, while Brexten Starley hit a single, double and had four RBI. Tate Maynard and Tyler West each drove in two runs for the winners.

Crimson Cliffs sent 17 different batters to the plate and they all finished with at least one hit.

“Guys stepped up,” Abbott said. “We’ve got some good guys in the lineup and they’re doing a good job. I like the way our guys are playing baseball right now.”

Crimson Cliffs, Snow Canyon and Dixie all have yet to lose a Region 10 game.

“It’s kind of a week-by-week thing,” Abbott said. “This region is hard. This region is tough. We just have to stay focused, have a planned approach, have some fun while we’re doing it and keep putting in the extra work. We’ll see where we’re at.”

The Thunder jumped out to an 8-0 lead after four innings, then survived a late-inning rally to beat the Tigers.
