David Kirk Nelson

Jan. 6, 1954-March 28, 2023

David Kirk Nelson was born Jan. 6, 1954, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Andrus Dee Nelson and Donna Jean Nelson (Kirk). He passed away peacefully March 28, 2023, in St. George, Utah, surrounded by loved ones.

Kirk grew up in Holiday, Utah, until 1969, when his family moved to Evanston, Wyoming. He graduated from Evanston High School in 1972. At a young age, he loved music and taught himself to play the piano and the drums. He developed a beautiful singing voice which he shared in several venues. Eventually, he recorded several popular pieces. He was a Kempo student and developed great skill in this art. Kirk took over the family motel business after his parents, Dee and Jean Nelson retired. He also worked at Anderson Lumber in Evanston, Wyoming, for several years.

Eventually, he bought a house and settled in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. He was very health conscious and stayed in good physical shape. He liked to lift weights, swim, hike and take his friends and family on adventures that they will never forget. He worked for Utah Transit Authority for 15 years and retired in 2016. He bought property in Hurricane, Utah, and Skyline Estates, above Fairview, Utah where he loved to hike all the mountains and canyons around that area. He bought an E-bike and loved exploring the mountains on it. He enjoyed boating and spent a few weeks last summer with his children boating on Lake Powell and running the snake river, which was something he did his whole life.

Kirk invested a lot of time and energy improving his picturesque pieces of land. He landscaped and laid a ton of rock around his property. He loved the outdoors and the wildlife there, often hiking many hours in and around Southern Utah taking in the magnificent scenery. Kirk loved animals and felt he was a protector for his beloved cats and for all the wildlife he was surrounded by. He had a lot of love to share with them. Kirk was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the Lord and often reached out to those who were shut in or handicapped. He loved the Temple and performed many ordinances for others there.

Kirk is survived by his children David Paul Nelson from Evanston, Wyoming, Chelsie and Richard Lansdell from Rome, Georgia, and Richard Dee (Rick) and Summer Nelson from Morgan, Utah. He has 11 grandchildren. He has two sisters, Patti (John) Marinos, who passed away in 2020, and Debbie (Conrad) Monson, who lives in Pleasant Grove, Utah.  He has two brothers, Larry and Sharon Nelson from Eagle, Idaho and Bryon and Karen Rock who live in Boise, Idaho.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 82 Center St. in Moroni, Utah, on Wednesday, April 5. There will be a viewing from 11-11:45 a.m.followed by the funeral service at noon. Interment will follow immediately afterward at the Moroni City Cemetery.
