4A boys state basketball: playoffs to begin in St. George and Logan; follow live on The Fan Sports Network

ST. GEORGE — The 4A boys state basketball tournament gets underway with six first-round games Tuesday night in St. George and in Logan, and fans can watch the action streamed live on The Fan Sports Network.

After tonight’s first round, the playoffs resume in Logan on Thursday with the 4A boys championship game scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. on the campus of Utah State University.

All of the games in Logan, all three days of the 4A state tournament, will also stream live on The Fan Sports Network

Following are brief previews of tonight’s 4A boys playoff games.

No. 12 Mountain Crest at No. 5 Crimson Cliffs, 7 p.m.: This playoff contest will pit the Mustangs of Region 10 against the Mustangs of Region 11.

Crimson Cliffs (14-7) finished third in the Region 10 standings with a mark of 8-4. Meanwhile, Mountain Crest (7-15) finished last in Region 11 at 1-9.

Crimson is led by senior Jordan Eaton, who averaged 18 points per game over the course of the season. Senior Oliver Nethercott paced Mountain Crest with 11.6 points per game.

No. 10 Cedar at No. 7 Desert Hills, 7 p.m.: This will be an all-Region 10 playoff game as the Reds and Thunder will meet for the third time in the season.

The Thunder (13-9) finished fourth in Region 10 with a 6-6 record. The Reds (8-13) meanwhile were 3-9 in region play and finished sixth.

Desert Hills beat Cedar 54-49 in the Thunderdome on Jan. 4, then beat the Reds in Cedar City 69-63 on Jan. 27.

The winner of the contest will face Region 10 co-champion and No. 2 seed Dixie in Game 11 of the 4A state tournament, in Logan, on Thursday at 12:50 p.m.

No. 13 Green Canyon at No. 4 Snow Canyon, 7 p.m.: This battle between two canyons will match the Wolves from Region 11 against the Warriors of Region 10.

Snow Canyon begins defense of its 4A state title in the Jungle after finishing 17-7 and securing a share of the Region 10 title at 10-2.

Meanwhile, Green Canyon (5-16) was fifth in Region 11 at 2-8. Jared Anderson leads the Wolves with 17.5 points per game.

Snow Canyon will counter with junior Owen Mackay and his 25.1 points per game.

Mackay threw in 27 points the first time these teams played, a 62-57 Snow Canyon win on Dec. 16. Anderson was almost as good in defeat, tossing in 26 points for Green Canyon.

The winner of this contest takes on the winner of Tuesday night’s Crimson Cliffs-Mountain Crest tilt. That will be Game 9 of the state tournament, in Logan, Thursday at 9:30 a.m.  

No. 9 Bear River at No. 8 Logan, 7 p.m.: The winner of this Region 11 rematch will go on to face No. 1 seed Sky View (20-2) on Thursday at 11:10 a.m.

Logan beat Bear River both times they met in the regular season, 68-53 and 56-46.

No. 14 Hurricane at No. 3 Ridgeline, 5 p.m.: The Tigers (2-19) did not win a game in Region 10 competition and finished last in the standings.

Ridgeline (17-4) finished second in Region 11 at 8-2.

No. 11 Pine View at No. 6 Layton Christian Academy, 7 p.m.: The Panthers (6-15) finished fifth in the Region 10 standings at 5-7.

Griffen Shepherd (19.9 points per game) and Nash Schroeder (15.7 points per game) lead the Panthers, who won three out of their last four games.

Meanwhile, LCA (16-10) is playing in its first 4A state tournament. The Eagles beat Snow Canyon (60-57) but lost to Dixie (72-66) earlier this season in their only regular-season games against Region 10 opponents.

No. 1 seed Sky View also beat the Eagles, 76-69, in the regular season.

LCA is led by a trio of double-digit scorers: Otavio Armani (15.6 points per game), Tyrese Lacey (11.4 points per game) and Souleymame Barro (11.4 points per game).

The winner of Pine View-LCA will advance to face the winner of Hurricane-Ridgeline in Game 12 of the 4A tournament, Thursday, in Logan at 2:30 p.m.
