Marcene Camp Jardine, 94, passed away on Jan. 28, 2023, in St George, Utah.
Born Aug. 29, 1928, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Albert Virgil and Bernetta Robbins Camp, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, her parents, brother Virgil Hugh Camp and sister-in-law Bettie Jane Camp.
Marcene grew up in Pocatello, Idaho, and graduated from Pocatello High School. She graduated from Brigham Young University in May 1951 and married Earl D. Jardine in June 1951. He was recalled for service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and they immediately moved to Washington, D.C., where she was employed by the Marriott Corporation. Later they transferred to San Diego.
Upon his release from the military, they moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they both taught school. They relocated to Hemet, California, and from there moved to Oxnard, California. They lived in Oxnard for 55 years and had a huge impact in the community. Marcene was the director for choirs at the CBC base Protestant chapel and their LDS ward. She had many private vocal students. She taught music for Oxnard Elementary Schools, Oxnard College and had a successful children’s choir through Ventura County Master Chorale. Her children’s choir performed in Washington, D.C., toured Italy, London and Czechoslovakia.
She also helped establish the Community Concert series and the Oxnard Children’s Museum. She performed in the Hollywood Bowl and throughout Southern California. She loved opera and instilled a love for classical music in all her young students. She insisted all four of her children take piano lessons and would spend Saturday mornings knitting during the multiple lessons. She was awarded the BYU Alumni Achievement Award for Community Involvement.
Marcene was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many positions. Her Relief Society lessons in cultural refinement were legendary. Earl and Marcene served a service mission at the BYU Jerusalem Center and served on the Ventura County Inter-Faith council. She always claimed that one of the highlights of her life was soloing in the Salt Lake Tabernacle with a choir conducted by her brother.
Marcene is survived by her sisters Jan Camp Noyes (David), Jennifer Camp Beagley (Jerry-deceased), sister-in-law Jenn Camp, her four children, Brad (Alice) Jardine of Phoenix Arizona; Heather (Gary) Carroll of St. George, Utah; Doug (Terri) Jardine of Sandy, Utah, and Lark (Keith) Boyd of Bullhead City, Arizona, 17 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Michael Codiga and Atlas Hospice and also the loving staff at Sterling Court Assisted Living for their tender care of our mom.
Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 10:30 am, with a visitation prior to services from 9-10 a.m., at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 South Bluff St., St. George, Utah.
