4A boys basketball: Dixie wins twice, 3 more Region 10 squads victorious in 2nd day of Walker Classic

ST. GEORGE — It was all basketball, all the time Friday as the 2022 Coach Walker Classic holiday tournament moved through its second day.

Region 10 teams had a good showing, for the most part. Dixie won twice, winning the early and late games at Crimson Cliffs High School.

Snow Canyon gutted out a nice bounce-back win, then Crimson Cliffs won its second game in as many days.

And Desert Hills put together a solid home victory, beating Maple Mountain by 15 points.

Meanwhile, classic host Pine View fell and Cedar suffered its third loss in a row.

Following are recaps of Friday’s Coach Walker Classic games featuring Region 10 teams.

Snow Canyon 62, Green Canyon 57

The Warriors (6-2) and Wolves both played suffocating defense, but in the end Snow Canyon was led to victory by its stars in a 3-point shooting extravaganza.

“Sometimes you gotta go with how the flow of the game is going,” Snow Canyon coach Doug Meacham told St. George News. “They were hitting 3’s. We didn’t do a good enough job getting out to the 3’s.”

Karter Murdock sank a 3 for Snow Canyon at the buzzer of the first quarter for an early 17-13 Warriors advantage.

The second quarter opened with four straight 3-pointers, two for each team. The low-scoring session ended with Snow Canyon taking a 28-25 lead at halftime.

Senior leading scorer Owen Mackay sank four of his five 3-pointers in the third quarter and the Warriors clung to a 47-44 lead going into the final frame.

“I think if this team continues to play to make plays for guys, it just creates better 3’s for us,” Meacham said. “And they’ve been doing that.”

Overall Snow Canyon shot 10-for-21 from beyond the arc, good for a 48 percent clip. The defending 4A state champions feature six seniors in an eight-man rotation.

“We’re still growing. We’re still a team trying to figure out an identity a little bit,” Meacham said. “Different guys are needing to step up.”

Cy Meacham tallied 14 points in the winning effort and Will Warner netted 10 points. Coach Meacham praised the hard work and defensive effort by senior Bear Leavitt, who is working back to form after getting banged up early in the season.

“We’re just trying to get that toughness to get stops when we need them. I think our best basketball is still ahead of us,” Meacham said.

Dixie 49, Riverton 40

The Flyers (8-1) had enough energy reserves in their second game of the day to play active, physical defense for four quarters and shut down the Silverwolves.

The defensive intensity peaked in the second quarter when Dixie held Riverton to no points. The only two points the Silverwolves got in the frame came via a goaltending call against Dixie big man Kyle Lemke.

“We buckled down and we talked about getting some kills, some consecutive stops,” Dixie coach Tyler Roberts told St. George News. “And that’s really the difference in the game, was that second quarter.”

Lemke had back-to-back buckets in the low scoring (8-2) second quarter and Dixie led at halftime 25-17.

In the third quarter it was Dixie’s turn to survive a cold stretch as a hoop from Jordan Roberts and a 3-pointer by John Southwick were the only Flyers’ field goals in the session. They trailed 31-30 entering the fourth.

Breckon Robinson opened the period with a 3-pointer and Lemke later had two more buckets from the paint as Dixie knotted it up 37-37 with four minutes remaining.

Then the Flyers finished the rest of contest on a 12-3 run and locked up the win.

“We put it together down the stretch,” coach Roberts said. “They (the Silverwolves) were just big and strong and physical and we executed down the stretch. We went a little spell there where we couldn’t score. But right down there at the end we put together a couple really good plays and some good passes.”

Lemke led all Dixie scorers with 14 points and Jordan Roberts scored 13. Robinson chipped in with nine points for the winners. Coach Roberts said Damon Meyers put in some strong minutes for the Flyers on defense, deflecting passes and notching three steals in the win.

Dixie 65, Logan 53

The Flyers were all over the Grizzlies in their first game Saturday, leading 18-9 after one quarter and 30-23 at halftime. They secured the win with a dominant third session, outscoring Logan 20-8 in the frame.

Lemke had the hot hand again, netting 18 points off of 8-for-11 field goal shooting. Six different Flyers sank one 3-pointer. Both Southwick and Grant Carter scored 13 points for the Dixie cause.

Desert Hills 66, Maple Mountain 51

The Thunder (4-3) led from the opening tip and grounded the Golden Eagles. Desert Hills jumped out to a 26-12 lead after one quarter and was ahead for good at halftime, 39-17.

Junior Eli Allred led all scorers with 21 points. Chomp Jones chipped in next with 14 points including four 3-pointers. In the win Desert Hills shot 24 total field goals–16 of them were from beyond the arc.

Boston Holbrook was in double figures with 10 points and Lincoln Holmes contributed nine points for the winners off of three 3-pointers.

Crimson Cliffs 66, Spanish Fork 56

The Mustangs (5-3) won their second consecutive contest, this time beating the Dons by 10.

Individual scoring was not available at press time.

Crimson beat Riverton in overtime on the first day and is 2-0 in the classic. The Mustangs play Maple Mountain on Saturday, then get a break for the holidays and next play Jan. 4 in a Region 10 matchup at Snow Canyon.

Manti 66, Pine View 51

The Templars handed the classic hosts a 15-point setback.

Pine View slipped to 1-6 overall after the loss.

Manti led 15-8 after one quarter and 27-21 at halftime.

Nash Schroeder led the Panthers for the second game in a row, throwing in 17 points including three 3-pointers. Timothy Long was the only other Pine View scorer in double digits, finishing with 10 points.

Pine View plays Logan in its final game of the classic, then gets time off for the holidays. The Panthers next play in their first Region 10 game Jan. 6 at home against Snow Canyon.

Bountiful 70, Cedar 61

Cedar (3-4) led the Redhawks 16-13 after the first frame but Bountiful rallied after that.

Landon Kreitzer paced the Reds with 20 points including four 3-pointers. Ty Bronson scored 18 and Stockton Albrecht netted 14 in the Cedar defeat.

Cedar plays Spanish Fork Saturday before taking on in-town rival Canyon View on Dec. 20.
