Kristen Carter, adjutant with the New Harmony Fire Department, told Cedar City News that the call came in around 1:25 p.m. reporting a crash on Old Highway 144 near 900 East.

Carter said a waste management truck had been heading eastbound when its driver veered off the road on the southbound side. Based on the preliminary information available, the driver appears to have lost control for some reason and overcorrected.

Photographs taken at the scene show the truck came to rest on its passenger side atop a small berm that runs parallel to the roadway, with the empty trash container it had been transporting coming to rest a short distance away.

The driver, who was able to exit the truck on his own, reportedly had no serious injuries.

“He was checked by our medical personnel and then Gold Cross (Ambulance) as well, but he was not transported,” Carter said.

A total of seven personnel from New Harmony Fire responded, including firefighters and EMTs, she added. Washington County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the incident.

“We monitored traffic on the road for about 30 minutes while the medical people did their job, but there was no blockage of the road,” Carter said.

Officials with the waste management services company that owns the truck later arranged for another of its trucks to recover the damaged vehicle and the waste container.

Carter expressed her appreciation for the several volunteer firefighters who responded.

“I think it’s important that people understand how much of the area is served by volunteer firefighters,” she said.

This report is based on statements from emergency responders and other officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
