CEDAR CITY — Showcasing the entrepreneurial spirit of a growing community, the third annual Best of Iron County contest highlighted the very finest in small business that the Cedar City area has to offer, from burgers and pizza to automotive shops and building contractors.

Best of Iron County is an opportunity for business owners, employees, customers and fans throughout the community to let their voices be heard. And the people of Iron County spoke up in a big way, with 585 nominations received and 178,000 votes cast.

“We continue to be blown away by how the community has embraced the contest and supported local business,” Canyon Media general manager Ben Lindquist said. “For us, being able to showcase all that Iron County has to offer is one of the highlights of the year.”

Gold and silver award winners were crowned in 10 consolidated categories: Activities and Entertainment, Business and Services, Food and Beverage, General Services, Home and Garden, Lifestyle and Beauty, Medical, Schools, Shopping, and Vehicles and Services. The 227 winning businesses are displayed at BestofIronCounty.com and in the Best of Iron County magazine.

Known as “Festival City USA,” millions of people pass through Cedar City every year. Whether it’s to pay a visit to nearby Cedar Breaks National Monument or catch a play during the award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival, both tourists and locals need to know the best places to stop while they’re in Iron County’s biggest city.

With this in mind, Canyon Media will be distributing a total of 7,500 copies of the magazine over the coming weeks. Complimentary copies are now available at the following eight businesses in Cedar City area:

  • Brian K. Tavoian Family Dentistry, 510 S. Main St., Cedar City.
  • Christensen’s Department Store, 984 S. Main St., Cedar City.
  • State Bank of Southern Utah, 377 N. Main St., Cedar City.
  • Bulloch’s Drug Store, 91 N. Main St., Cedar City.
  • Cedar Bowling Center, 421 E. Highway 91, Cedar City.
  • Bristlecone, 67 W. Center St., Cedar City.
  • Silver Silo Bakery & Espresso, 777 S. Cross Hollow Drive, Cedar City.

Adding to the prestige, this year’s prize packages for the winners include gold and silver medals as well as a window cling and a certificate. Keep an eye out around town for Best of Iron County awards on display at various businesses.

“Operating a small, local business is never easy and often goes overlooked. It can be a thankless job filled with long hours and plenty of hard work,” Lindquist said. “For our team, highlighting winners in a beautiful magazine and dropping off a winner’s kit with a certificate, a window cling and an actual gold or silver medal is a great way to celebrate small business.”

Best of Iron County was presented by Canyon Media, Cedar City News and returning title sponsor Brian K. Tavoian Family Dentistry, Cedar City’s “smile doctor” for 30 years and counting.

Just like the unique flavor of the greater St. George area, which was showcased earlier this year during the fourth annual Best of Southern Utah contest, Iron County carries its own appeal and style. There aren’t many places where visitors will find rich heritage and small-town charm blended effortlessly with a burgeoning tourism economy and the environment of an acclaimed university.

For these attributes – and many others – Iron County is a great place to do business.

Lindquist believes small businesses are the heart and soul of rural communities, and finding new and better ways to serve the people of Iron County has been a priority for Canyon Media in recent years.

“It’s a really strong business community,” he said. “If you’re going to make it in Iron County, you’ve got to have a great product and great customer service, and you’ve got to be a hard worker.”
