Cedar High girls, boys each take 2nd overall at Cedar City Invitational swim meet

CEDAR CITY — The Cedar High School Reds placed second overall in both the female and male divisions of the invitational swim meet they hosted Friday-Saturday.

Pleasant Grove, a 6A school in Utah County, won both the girls’ and boys’ meets. The event, which was staged at Cedar City Aquatic Center, attracted 13 schools from around the state.

Following are selected highlight performances featuring top finishes by athletes from Southern Utah schools:

For the girls, Cedar’s Aspen Simper placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 200 free. Teammate Olivia Price placed fourth in those same two events. Also for Cedar, Natalie Moses placed third in the 100 free and fifth in the 200 free, while Sydney Selinger placed third in the 100 back.

Claire Daley of Crimson Cliffs won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 37.06 seconds. She also placed second out of 90 swimmers in the 50 free in 25.96 seconds. Also for Crimson Cliffs, freshman Kate Walker placed third in the 100 fly with a time of 1:05.88, just over one second behind runner-up finisher Addison Taylor of Cedar, who finished in 1:04.57.

Cedar’s girls also won the 200 free relay and placed second in the other two relay events. Crimson Cliffs took third in the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.

In the boys’ meet, junior Josh Walker of Crimson Cliffs won both of his individual races. He placed first out of 99 swimmers in the 50 free, posing a time of 22.50 seconds. He also won the 100 fly on Saturday morning in 1:54.83.

Placing second in the 50 free was James Smith of Cedar, who finished in 23.16. Jacob Grimshaw of Canyon View took third in 23.95. Grimshaw also won the 100 free with a time of 52.82 seconds, while Cedar’s Emery Cook placed second in that same event, finishing in 53.43.

Also for Canyon View, Kurt Morgan won the 500 free in a time of 5:21.93. 

Nathan Nixon of Crimson Cliffs took second place in the 100 breast in a time of 1:10.58.

Cedar High had the top two swimmers in both the 200 free and 200 individual medley events. In the 200 free, Andrew Sagers finished first in 1:57.17, followed by teammate Ashten Krans, who was clocked in 1:58.70. And in the very next event on Friday evening, Cedar’s Justin Granado won the 200 individual medley in 2:13.14, narrowly edging runner-up Kala Cabana, who finished in 2:13.32.
