ST. GEORGE — Sub-freezing temperatures in Washington County are expected overnight Thursday through Friday morning, according to a hard freeze watch issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday. A hard freeze warning also has been issued.
Included in the hard freeze watch is lower Washington County, specifically the cities of St. George, Hurricane, Ivins and Springdale.
Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit are possible for the outlying areas of lower Washington County from Thursday evening through Friday morning. St. George proper will likely remain above 28 degrees Fahrenheit but may see frost, according to the weather service.
A hard freeze warning was issued for the communities of the Zion corridor including the cities of Springdale, Rockville and Virgin in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit are expected, according to the weather service.
Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Precautionary/ preparedness
Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
