ST. GEORGE — Seven superb photographs rose above a competitive field of 734 entries to win the first annual Scenic Utah Photo Contest.

Judges selected winning images in six categories, and hundreds of Utahns cast “fan favorite” votes from among the judges’ top picks, according to a news release from Scenic Utah, a statewide nonprofit advocating to protect Utah’s scenic resources, according to a news release.
Scenic Utah launched the contest to celebrate the Beehive State’s natural beauty, its historic rural character and the state’s unparalleled – and increasingly threatened – scenic vistas and skylines.
“These winning images highlight Utah’s extraordinary scenic resources and the importance of protecting them,” Ralph Becker, former Salt Lake City mayor and Scenic Utah board chair, said in the news release.
The winning photo title, photographer name, location of residence and category include:
- “Ostler Lake” by Spencer Sullivan (Roy); category: Off the Beaten Path
- “Barn with Yellow Flowers” (Newton) by Hans Christian Ettengruber (Logan); category: My Rural Roots
- “Rainbow in Sand Hollow by Nathan Hanson (West Jordan); category: Town, City, and State Parks
- “Magic Bus” by Dave Koch (Salt Lake City); category: Scenic Night Skies
- “Westside Sign” by Kirk Anderson (Salt Lake City); category: Community Character
- “High Power Interference” by Steve Wise (Layton); category: Visual Pollution
- “The Boys are Back” (Antelope Island) by Shauna Hart (Logan); category: Audience Favorite
