ST. GEORGE — A 35-year-old man from Washington City hasn’t been seen in more than a week.

While Kendall Nathan Holm is described as a “survivalist” who was once a crew member on the same kind of king crab fishing boats off Alaska seen in television’s “Deadliest Catch,” Holm’s father, Paul Holm, said anything is possible as far as his son’s whereabouts.

A missing person report was filed early Wednesday with the Washington City Police Department for the younger Holm, who was last seen before 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Paul Holm said his son left his home at the Windsor Condominiums on Quail Ridge Drive in Washington City and didn’t let anyone know where he was going.

“He didn’t say a word to me the night before,” Paul Holm said of his son. “He left everything including his brand new iPhone.”

Along with his phone , Kendall Holm left behind his driver’s license, debit card or any other source of funds and his jacket and had no transportation and departed on foot, Paul Holm said. Despite that, he said his son knew how to take care of himself.

“He’s an experienced camper and survivalist. He was an EMT and firefighter in Alaska,” Paul Holm said. “He knows how to survive.”

Kendall Helm has been doing construction jobs including working on a refurbishment at the condos. He also volunteered at several assisted living facilities locally.

Paul Holm said his son had gone off before and liked to walk on the dirt roads on the Utah-Arizona border.

“The county sheriff picked him up in Arizona on the strip two or three different times out walking,” he said.

But Kendall Holm would usually tell his father that he was heading there. Not this time.

And while Paul Holm said his son hadn’t expressed suicidal thoughts, he still may not have been in the right frame of mind.

“He’s been a little bit despondent and struggling with something. I don’t know what,” Paul Holm said. “We usually have a good clue where he went but this time we don’t. Anything is possible.”

Kendall Holm is 5-foot-11, 175 pounds with red hair and a red beard, though his father said he had “trimmed up” his hair recently. Anyone with any information can call (435) 986-1515 and refer to case 22Z008265.

Other missing cases

Holm is not the only local adult who went missing in the last week. In this case, while both Washington County Search and Rescue and a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter got involved in the search, the man turned up on his own.

Last Thursday, Oct. 20, the search team and the helicopter were dispatched to look for an unnamed man that had been missing since the previous Tuesday in a desolate area near Gunlock.

The man had been living in a trailer off Montoqua Road but the man, without warning, didn’t show up for work. On Thursday afternoon, authorities said they found the man’s trailer empty but there were “no suspicious circumstances” and the man’s vehicle was also missing.

The helicopter was dispatched from St. George Regional Airport to aid in a search of the area with few clues as to where he might be with no indication that he intended to take his life.

“That was us calling the DPS helicopter because there’s a lot of country,”  Sgt. Darrell Cashin, who oversees Washington County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team, said. “We had a description of his truck and it’s easier for their guy. To spot it and we (didn’t) have a clue where he might be. We can’t even do a ping on his cell phone because we would need probable cause like he’s a danger to himself or others.”

Ultimately, Cashin said Wednesday, he turned up a few days later.

“He did contact his friend and told him he was OK,” Cashin said. “He just wanted to be left alone for a while.”
