ST. GEORGE — A collision Saturday afternoon near the new temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints caused two people to be taken to the hospital after their SUV rolled over.

“The smaller passenger vehicle was traveling south on 3000 East, while the Honda was traveling into the intersection from 1450 South entering into where it turns into George Washington Boulevard,” St. George Police Officer Maryann Wangsgard said.

The collision on the border of Washington caused the CR-V to spin sideways and flip, coming to rest upside down about 10 yards outside of the intersection.

The Genesis driver was not injured during the incident, police said. His vehicle had minor to medium damage but still had to be towed off the scene.

The CR-V driver, along with another young adult female passenger, was transported to St George Regional Hospital via ambulance. A tow truck eventually righted the vehicle and removed it from the scene. The road was cleared at about 6:43 p.m.

Extensive damage was done to the CR-V, and many items, including stuffed animals, were scattered on the roadway.

Two St. George Police officers and one Washington City Police officer were on the scene to direct traffic.

“Out here, we have too many who do this and run through red lights,” Wangsgard said.

Yellow means to slow down, not speed up, she said, adding that speed was a factor in the wreck.

Authorities said the brother of the driver of the CR-V reported that she was doing well with minor injuries and being observed for concussion. The passenger was also OK with minor injuries. All persons involved in the wreck were wearing their seatbelts.

The Genesis driver was cited for running a red light, police said.
