CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Desert Pain Specialists, Southern Utah’s largest pain clinic, continues to improve access to specialty care for new and existing patients throughout the region with the announcement of additional locations in St. George and Hildale.

As the area’s premier interventional pain management team, Desert Pain practices evidence-based, forward-thinking medicine that integrates the newest available treatments. They address all types of pain conditions including back pain, neck pain, sciatica, neuropathy, migraines and sports injuries.

The practice was founded in 2007 by Dr. Court Empey, with Dr. Spencer Wells joining in 2011. Both physicians are St. George natives who recognized an unmet need in the area for the treatment of chronic pain. Today, the Desert Pain team has grown to five physicians and 11 advanced practice providers.

Their state-of-the-art facility in St. George allows them to offer unmatched quality of care. And with auxiliary locations in Hurricane, Cedar City, Beaver, Panguitch, Kanab, Delta and Fillmore as well as Mesquite and Overton, Nevada, they’re prepared to serve the needs of the area’s growing population.

With even more future growth in mind, Desert Pain will be opening two additional satellite clinics in the coming weeks. A new St. George clinic will serve residents of the west side of the city along with Santa Clara and Ivins. It’s located at 2107 W. Sunset Blvd., within the same office building as Hammons Dental and Farris & Utley, PC.

“St. George is growing, and traffic is getting busier,” clinic administrator Megan Phelps said. “Our goal is to help new and existing patients on that side of town by saving them the drive.”

Dr. Steven Larsen will lead the Sunset clinic, seeing patients every other week and adding more days as the patient base grows. Larsen, an anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist, strives to empower his patients to take better care of their bodies and recognize the role they play in their own healing, from the way they eat, sleep and move each day to the bigger picture of how they view themselves and their pain condition.

Desert Pain is also expanding care access to the Short Creek communities along the Utah-Arizona border by opening a location in Hildale. The clinic is located inside Fit Physical Therapy at 1040 W. Utah Ave. and will serve patients on both sides of the state line. Desert Pain accepts all major insurances, including Arizona AHCCCS, the state’s Medicaid provider.

Nurse practitioner Nick Stucki will be seeing patients once a month at the Hildale location for clinic work. He will perform some in-office procedures and assist with medication management. Patients requiring advanced procedures that must be performed with live X-ray guidance in St. George can be evaluated closer to home, saving them a significant amount of driving time.

“At Desert Pain, we’re very passionate about taking care of our patients in rural areas,” Phelps said. “Understanding they have very limited access to specialty practice, we want to make it more convenient. Even if we can’t provide all the procedure options, we can at least cut their drive time by being able to offer clinic services.”

Desert Pain stands at the forefront of treating acute and chronic pain in Southern Utah by offering patients shorter wait times and more one-on-one time with compassionate care providers trained in the latest procedures.

The physicians work diligently to put patients at ease by helping them navigate the consultation, diagnosis and treatment process. Along with a support staff of knowledgeable physician assistants and nurse practitioners, they’re willing to spend as much time with each patient as necessary for them to feel comfortable.

Living with a pain condition is a daily battle against an invisible enemy. At Desert Pain, patients aren’t just treated – they’re seen, heard, understood and supported throughout their pain management journey. To schedule an appointment, visit DesertPainSpecialists.com or call 435-216-7000.
