CEDAR CITY — Over 500 runners from around the world participated in Cedar City’s 13th Annual Half Marathon through Cedar Canyon on Sept. 10. This year’s race was organized by Cedar City’s new events director, Brooke Twitchell, with many new surprises that officials said participants raved about at the finish line.

“This is one of our biggest events of the year in Cedar City,” Twitchell said. “I love the creativity my job provides when planning a community event and I made sure to have the right people at the table to help plan this unforgettable experience.”

The half marathon’s signature bagpipers made their annual appearance in the first few miles of the race through Cedar Canyon, with a new addition this year featuring a local cellist band and Cedar City Star Search participant, Cellomania, who played a unique set of songs at Veterans Park as runners made their way on the city trail system. Another memorable moment was the finish line party complete with awards, a large spread of catered food, runner’s massages and a live ‘80s cover band known as The Breakfast Klub out of Park City, Utah.

All participants received a commemorative T-shirt, swag bag and medal hand-delivered by Miss Iron County or Miss Color Country’s Outstanding Teen. Age division winners won another medal on top of that to add to their collection along with a $25 gift card. This year’s top three winners for overall male and female categories also received their own medals, gift cards, and a hand-crafted trophy hand delivered by Mayor Garth O. Green at the award ceremony.

“We love that so many people look forward to this race every year, “ Twitchell said. “Whether you are homegrown in Cedar City or traveling in to admire the breathtaking beauty of Cedar Canyon, there is no denying you will leave feeling some type of way after running 13.1 miles.”
