Region 10 girls soccer: Desert Hills, Snow Canyon at top of standings, with Cedar a half game behind

ST. GEORGE — In Region 10 high school girls soccer action this week, Desert Hills, Snow Canyon and Cedar continued to stay near each other as the top three teams in the standings. Cedar lost a close decision at Crimson Cliffs on Thursday to fall into third place with a 6-2 region record, one-half game behind both Snow Canyon, which defeated Pine View, and Desert Hills, which was idle.

In other action Thursday night, Dixie outlasted Hurricane in a penalty kick shootout, putting both teams’ records at 3-5, tied with Crimson Cliffs.

Following are short recaps of this week’s contests:

Thursday’s games

Snow Canyon 4, Pine View 1

At Pine View, Snow Canyon junior Ashlee Harris recorded a hat trick and teammate Lilly Wittwer added another goal as the Warriors defeated the Panthers.

Crimson Cliffs 2, Cedar 1

At Crimson Cliffs, the Mustangs avenged their earlier season loss to Cedar by defeating the Reds, 2-1. Cedar led 1-0 at halftime, but the Mustangs got both an equalizer and a go-ahead goal in the second half to secure the victory. Crimson’s first goal was scored by Quinci Smith, off a corner kick by Ella Cotter. Then, just past the halfway point of the second half, Avery Cardenas scored what proved to be the game-winner, off an assist from Kenzie Palmer.

Dixie 2, Hurricane 2 (Dixie wins shootout 5-4)

At Dixie, the Flyers battled the Hurricane Tigers evenly in both halves of regulation, followed by two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods. That sent the game to a deciding penalty kick shootout, with Dixie converting on all five of its attempts to Hurricane’s four.

The score was tied 1-1 at halftime and 2-2 at the end of regulation. Scoring Dixie’s goals were Hali’a Pelton and Jaide Bundy.

Tuesday’s games

Desert Hills 1, Crimson Cliffs 0

Kooper Dennison scored the Thunder’s lone tally in the second half and Desert Hills remained tied for first-place in Region 10.

Ellie Hendrix assisted the marker and Desert Hills goalkeeper Aisey Gargano posted another shutout.

Hurricane 3, Pine View 2

The Tigers struck twice in the first half and once in the second to secure the home victory.

Hailey Lemmon netted two scores for Hurricane and assisted their third goal, tallied by Ashlin Neeley.

Panthers Ava Schall and Ashley Leavitt scored for Pine View, both in the second half.

Cedar 1, Dixie 0

In a gritty road victory, Keana Tolman converted an assist from Rylan Tebbs in the first half then the Reds held on to survive. 

Cedar goalkeeper Cambria Simper recorded the shutout.

The Reds improved to 6-1 in Region 10 play, tying them for first place with Desert Hills.

“We’ve got Keana and Rylan together this year. We don’t have that next year,” Cedar coach Scott Kamachi told St. George News after the win. “So let’s take advantage of that while we can and be competitive and go out there and play, and see what happens.”

  2. Snow Canyon, 6-1, 8-3.
  3. Cedar, 6-2, 8-3.
  4. Hurricane, 3-5, 4-7.

  6. Dixie, 3-5, 3-10.
  7. Pine View, 0-8, 1-10.
