‘Like a gas pump in your garage’: Why now’s the time to invest in renewable energy with HedgeHog Electric & Solar

CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — With more than 300 bright, clear days in any given year, the St. George area is an ideal location for harnessing the power of the sun. Investing in the long-term savings of solar energy helps homeowners lower their electric bills, reduce their dependence on the power grid and shrink their environmental footprint.

Installing a solar system is one of the most important decisions a homeowner will make, and more Southern Utahns than ever before are trusting HedgeHog Electric & Solar to guide them through the process.

“We doubled our numbers last year, and we’re projecting to double it again,” said Kirk Navar, sales manager of the solar department at HedgeHog. “Solar growth has been really good in the area.”

Electricity, like transportation and internet access, is a necessity of modern life and power companies have total control over how much their customers must pay for that necessity. But homeowners can regain some control with a solar installation.

The greater savings happen the longer a solar system is installed and operating. The exponential growth of the St. George area will inevitably continue to drive energy costs upward, and every rate increase means a higher return on investment for the homeowner.

“If you know you’re going to need electricity for the rest of your life, you can choose to rent it from a power company or have a solar system and own your electricity,” Navar said. “It’s like a gas pump in your garage.”

A number of federal and state tax incentives are currently available to homeowners installing solar. If there’s qualifying electrical work that needs to be done on the house, it may be covered by tax credits well. This includes efficiency upgrades, like switching to LED lights or hanging new fans, and installing the wiring to charge an electric vehicle. With every investment into energy savings, the value of a property increases greatly.

The first step for homeowners considering solar is to learn about their power company’s net metering program. This is what allows customers to add a solar system while remaining connected to the power grid, and each company has its own.

The solar energy market is exploding in Southern Utah, and Navar said it’s just a matter of time before homeowners get a knock on their door from a solar salesperson. He recommends shopping around and gathering at least three quotes before making a decision.

Once customers choose HedgeHog, they’ll meet with an electrician to calculate the ideal placement of the panels, how much energy the system will generate and other details.

HedgeHog is a locally owned company that has been providing residential and commercial electrical services since 2008. They won gold in the electrician category in the 2021 and 2020 Best of Southern Utah and enchant families throughout the St. George area every holiday season with their Christmas Light Spectacular.

The company ventured into the solar energy market about four years ago, initially working as an installation contractor for various sales companies. Today, they handle every step of the process themselves, from sales to customer service to installation.

“Being that we’re electricians by trade, we understand how to build a solar system into a house rather than just putting it onto the house,” Navar said. “The quality of the install of a HedgeHog system, there’s just no better in my opinion.”

HedgeHog has the knowledge and skill to help customers find the right solar energy solution for their home. They also work with city and local government officials to obtain the required permits and permissions to install and use the system. Installing a solar system for residential customers typically takes between 30 and 45 days, allowing homeowners to start enjoying the benefits of renewable energy sooner.
