The crash involved a red SUV and a black and white tour bus and was called in at approximately 4:45 p.m., according to the Utah Department of Public Safety’s website.

The SUV was traveling south on Kolob Terrace Road, when it stopped at a stop sign near mile marker 19, at the Highway 9 intersection. It then pulled out in front of the westbound bus, which struck the driver’s side of the SUV, the department reported, adding that the reason the SUV pulled onto the highway at that time is still unknown.

The male driver and female front-seat passenger of the SUV were both pronounced dead at the scene by emergency management services personnel. There were also two juvenile occupants in the vehicle: a girl, who was ejected and transported from the scene via ambulance and a boy, who was life-flighted. The department said the family appeared to be visiting Utah.

Some tour bus occupants reportedly received minor injuries, the department said. The bus driver, tour guide and passengers were cooperating with the investigation.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department and La Verkin City Police also responded to the scene.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
