ST. GEORGE — The Region 10 boys tennis tournament took place last weekend at Tonaquint Tennis Center, with four different high schools winning at least one of the five brackets.

Only defending state 4A champion Crimson Cliffs managed to win more than one region bracket as the Mustangs took first place in both first singles and second singles. Dixie took home the third singles crown, while Snow Canyon and Cedar each won one of the doubles brackets.

However, in the overall team results, Desert Hills finished first. Even though the Thunder didn’t win any of the five brackets, they placed second in three of them and third in the other two. Crimson Cliffs placed second overall as a team, with Dixie a close third.

This year’s state tournament seedings are being determined by each player or pair’s RPI ranking, based on their overall season record, not just how they placed in region. Therefore, players’ state seedings might be higher or lower than their region results.

In the region finals in first singles, Liam Duffin, Crimson Cliffs, defeated Jaden Wittwer, Desert Hills, 6-1, 6-3. Duffin earned the top seed in the state tournament, while Pine View’s Kaden Koch, who placed third in region, got the No. 2 seed at state.

Meanwhile, in second singles, Luke Jolley of Crimson Cliffs defeated Jackson Holman of Desert Hills in the region finals, 6-1, 6-2. Jolley and Holman are respectively seeded second and fifth in the state tournament bracket.

In third singles, Michael Winward of Dixie defeated Nathan Bentley of Crimson Cliffs 6-4, 6-3 to claim the region crown. However, Bentley has a higher state seeding, at No. 5, while Winward is seeded sixth. Logan White of Desert Hills, who took third in region, is seeded fourth at state.

In first doubles, the Snow Canyon duo of Braden Koch and Bryce Jensen outlasted Pine View’s Dallin Racker and Roper Donn in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, to claim the region title. Koch and Jensen are seeded third in the state tournament bracket.

And in second doubles, Cedar’s William Geddes and Bridger Coates defeated Jeffrey Purcell and Trevin Day of Desert Hills, 6-3, 6-3. Geddes and Coates have earned the No. 4 seed at state this coming weekend.

The state 4A tournament is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Region 11’s Ridgeline is expected to be a top contender at state, with the RiverHawks having secured three No. 1 seeds in addition to one No. 2 and one No. 3 seed.

Note: the top three seeds in each bracket have first-round byes, while seeds No. 4-11 have to win their play-in matches Friday morning in order to advance to the quarterfinals.
