Local high school seniors shine in boys all-star basketball games

SALT LAKE CITY — Senior boys basketball players from around the state got one last chance to suit up and take the floor Friday night, as the Utah High School Basketball Coaches Association hosted three all-star games at Olympus High School.

Playing 10-minute quarters and little defense, the teams put on an offensive display, collectively racking up more than 100 made 3-pointers on the night.

Following are short recaps of each game, highlighting the performances and contributions of Southern Utah athletes.

The evening started with the 1A vs. 2A game. The 1A all-stars edged their 2A counterparts by a score of 98-95, with the 2A team missing a 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

The 1A team was led by Miles Roberts and Brock Syrett of Bryce Valley, who scored 19 and 16 points, respectively. Gavin Morgan of Piute added 14, Kyle Morgan of Piute made 10, and Jaden Westwood of Piute and Paxton Wolfley of Panguitch each scored seven. They were coached by Piute’s Eric Jessen.

The 2A squad included two Southern Utah players: Matthew Ramos and Nash Palmer of Enterprise. The team was led in scoring by Ethan Fielding of North Sevier, who finished with 26 points.

Next came the 4A vs. 3A contest. The 4A all-stars jumped out to an early 22-2 lead and stayed ahead the rest of the game, eventually winning 107-99.

Southern Utah players Zab Santana and Aaron Munson of Cedar High both scored in double figures for the 4A team, with Munson scoring 13 and Santana adding 11, including three treys. Snow Canyon’s Kaleb Anderson-Forman added four points. The team was coached by Snow Canyon head coach Doug Mecham.

There were also two players from Cedar City on the 3A squad, namely Xavier Kadous and Skylar Hignite of Canyon View High. Kadous finished with 16 points, while Hignite added nine.

Then, in the final game of the triple-header, the 6A all-stars outshot the 5A squad by a score of 145-128. The two teams combined to make 56 3-pointers, 33 by the 6A and 23 by the 5A.

The Utah Girls Basketball Coaches Association has scheduled a similar lineup of all-star games for senior girls on March 26 at Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, starting with a 1A vs. 2A contest at noon.
