ST. GEORGE — The high school track season got off to a strong start at last weekend’s Snow Canyon Invitational.
The two-day event attracted athletes from more than three dozen high schools from around the state. All seven Region 10 schools participated, in addition to several smaller Southern Utah schools as well as larger teams from along the Wasatch Front.
Host team Snow Canyon won the boys’ meet, with the Warriors scoring 97 team points to runner-up Pine View’s 54.
On the girls’ side, the Desert Hills Thunder were the highest-placing Southern Utah school, taking third overall with 51 points, behind only Bingham and Box Elder.
Following are some of the top highlights featuring local athletes:
Boys
Pine View senior Marcus McKenzie placed first in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. He posted respective times of 10.58 seconds and 21.44 seconds.

Snow Canyon junior Bo Hickman won the javelin with a throw of 201 feet, 6 inches, nearly 29 feet farther than that of the second-place finisher.
Desert Hills senior Tyson Parker won the long jump with a top mark of 21 feet, 5 inches. Coming in second place was Snow Canyon’s Brandon Gough, who jumped 20 feet, 11.25 inches.
Snow Canyon also had three other athletes place among the top six in the long jump, with Jake Hill taking third, Matt Maclennan taking fourth and Trevor Gough placing sixth. Trevor Gough also placed second in the 300-meter hurdles.
Winning the 300 hurdles was senior Jackson McKone of Crimson Cliffs, who posted a finals time of 40.37 seconds.
Sophomore Owen Mackay of Snow Canyon won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.
In addition, Snow Canyon boys placed first in the 4×100 relay with a time of 43.34, while the Beaver High School boys won the sprint medley relay. For complete meet results, visit runnercard.com.
Girls
Senior sprinter Kristin Cook of Snow Canyon won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.29 seconds, and also took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.26.

Snow Canyon senior Hailee Phillips won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:19.62. She also placed third overall in the 1,600.
Desert Hills senior Sa’de Turlington won the javelin event with a throw measuring 121 feet, 4 inches.
The Desert Hills girls also placed first in the 4×100 relay, posting a time of 50.06.
