Convenient, cost-effective and clean: Meet GoatTotes, the company changing the way we move

CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Moving hasn’t evolved much in the last 100 years, but it’s time for a change. Pack smart and move easy with GoatTotes, a new company transforming the way we get our belongings from place to place.

GoatTotes scraps traditional cardboard boxes and replaces them with durable, reusable plastic totes delivered right to your doorstep. Owner Hannah Demke launched the business in November 2020 to offer Southern Utahns a more convenient, cost-effective and environmentally conscious way to pack up and move between homes and offices. Customers love them, and moving companies do too.

“We thought there had to be a better way,” Demke said. “We’re looking to make a big splash in the moving industry.”

Cardboard boxes are a hassle – buying, assembling, packing, then unpacking and disposing of them. That’s where GoatTotes come in. They serve customers throughout St. George, Cedar City and Mesquite, Nevada.

No matter how you do it, moving is stressful, but packing doesn’t have to be with GoatTotes. Ordering totes online is simple, secure and only takes a few minutes. Packages start at $70 for 20 totes, which equates to a one-bedroom apartment, and the cost includes delivery and pickup. There are storage options of up to 70 totes for a four-bedroom house and up to 160 boxes for a 40-person workspace on the commercial side.

“If you were to go buy boxes at Lowe’s or Home Depot or a hardware store, you’d pay almost the same amount – if not more – than what we charge,” Demke said.

Over 100 billion cardboard boxes are manufactured each year in the United States alone. Per the Environmental Protection Agency, it takes roughly 17 trees to make 1 ton of cardboard boxes. That’s a lot of waste.

While most people only keep boxes for the duration of their move, GoatTotes can be reused hundreds of times before they need to be recycled. Demke said the containers are thoroughly washed and sanitized between orders. They’re also free from pests that tend to make homes in cardboard, like bed bugs.

Every order comes with labels, zip ties and at least one rolling cart. GoatTotes also provides additional packing materials if needed. If you’ve overestimated or underestimated your packing needs, you can modify your order anytime using the account webpage.

Customers keep the totes for a week, although longer rentals may be arranged for an extra fee. Additionally, the company can create customized packages to better suit your home or business.

GoatTotes uses industrial strength water-resistant plastic boxes made in the United States. All share a uniform size of 27 inches long by 17 inches wide by 12 inches high – or 2.3 cubic feet – which holds about 12-15 pairs of shoes, 35-40 T-shirts or 45-50 books. Totes are stackable for efficient storage and loading.

Equipped with latched lids and reinforced handles, they’re designed to be 10 times stronger than cardboard boxes to ensure your valuables get to their new home safe and sound.

And when the move is finished, GoatTotes will pick the boxes up at your new address.

GoatTotes are ready to go whenever you are. There’s no need to worry about buying and building boxes, dealing with tape guns and finding a place to dispose of the dirty and often damaged boxes afterward.

“It makes things so much simpler,” Demke said. “Moving isn’t a fun thing to do, but our goal and our hope is that we can make the moving process easier by making packing easier.”
