Competing at the UCCU Center on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, the Talons placed first in both the military and dance categories and second in show, thereby finishing ahead of runner-up North Sanpete for the title.

It marks Canyon View’s second-ever state drill state championship, with the other one coming in 2011.

Canyon View head coach Nicole Mikkelson said she and her fellow coaches were “beyond proud” of how the Talons performed at state.

“They came out and hit three amazing routines, leaving everything they had on the floor,” Mikkelson told Cedar City News on Saturday. “We couldn’t have asked for a better end to an amazing season.”

The Talons were part of a three-for-three sweep of Southern Utah high schools winning state drill titles on Friday: Dixie’s Jetettes won their third consecutive 4A title earlier in the day, while the Kanab Larriettes took home the 2A state championship trophy later that same evening.

Saturday morning, the girls on the 34-member Talons team climbed aboard a firetruck for a celebratory parade that made its way north on Cedar City’s Main Street until reaching Canyon View High School.
