George Quayle Cannon, III passed away peacefully Dec. 16, 2021, at Southgate Senior Living in St. George, Utah, surrounded by his loving family.
George is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ardes W. Cannon; two daughters, Jan Jones (Jerry), of St George, Utah, and Juli Schierman (Scott), of Casper, Wyoming; three sons, George Q., IV (Jean), of Mesquite, Nevada, David (Anita), of Washington D.C., and Jim (Suzy) of Kaysville, Utah; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and his sister Mary Jean Slater of Pike Road, Alabama.
He was predeceased by two sisters; Jeanne and Mary Jane; and a brother Vance.
George was born Oct. 12, 1931, in Glendale, California, to George Q. Cannon and Irene Chipman Cannon. His family moved to Hawaii when he was 9 years old. He served an LDS mission to New Zealand from 1950-1952. After his mission, he joined the Navy and served for four years during the Korean War, and an additional four years as a Naval Reservist. On Dec. 4, 1953, he married Ardes Christina Westlund in the LDS Hawaii Temple.
George worked for Meadow Gold Dairy and co-owned and operated the Cannon Pony Farm on the North Shore of Oahu, where he and his wife raised their five children and a menagerie of animals. In 1970, he moved with his family to St. George, Utah, where he worked as a gardener for the LDS temple until his retirement in 1994.
A natural conversationalist who loved meeting new people, he derived enormous pleasure from his part-time job as a salesman for Kaiser and Blair and Newton Manufacturing.
George had many hobbies. He was an avid stamp and antique car book collector and a passionate gardener who maintained a greenhouse with exotic plants and an immaculate yard with beautiful roses, flowers, and fruit and ornamental trees.
He was an active member of the LDS church and served as a high priest. He also served in many LDS Ward and Branch Presidencies, auxiliary organizations and at the St. George LDS Temple.
George was a great-grandson of George Q. Cannon and a great, great-grandson of Brigham Young. He valued his heritage and always tried to honor their name.
There will be a viewing on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, 9:30-10:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St. George 16th Ward, 550 E. 700 S., St. George, Utah.
The funeral service will be on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St. George 16th Ward, 550 E. 700 S., St. George, Utah.
Interment will take place on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, noon at the St. George City Cemetery, 650 E Tabernacle St., St. George, Utah.
