FEATURE — Dr. Jeff Mathews of the Arthritis Clinic of Central Utah in Provo is now bringing care to arthritis patients in Southern Utah two days a month with plans to make the move more permanent in the near future.
For over 35 years in Utah, Mathews has practiced rheumatology – a subspecialty of internal medicine which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and others. It is a work he said he loves and for which he has a great passion.
There are over 100 types of arthritis that affect people, Mathews said. They may be anything from 2 to 95 and come from all walks of life.
But for many arthritis sufferers in Southern Utah, their closest and best options for care have been either traveling to Provo or Las Vegas.

Prior to bringing his medical services to Southern Utah, Mathews said, he was already seeing about 150 patients from the south who were unable to get the specific care they needed in St. George or Cedar City.
Having to travel for specialized care can often prove difficult when patients need medication that a general practitioner can’t prescribe or have to travel out of state. Patients traveling from Utah to a provider in Las Vegas, for example, often find their insurance will not cover the care or will cost more for an out-of-state network provider.
For these patients especially, Mathews offers a welcome option among the St. George area medical community.
Mathews and his wife have had a home in the Green Valley area of St. George for a while and they are excited to make better use of it as they plan to set up a permanent practice in the area.
“We love it down here,” Mathews said, adding that he hopes that coming here will be a benefit for the community.
The Arthritis Clinic of Central Utah will remain open in Provo.
