Wind advisory issued for parts of central, southern Utah

ST. GEORGE – A wind advisory has been issued for the parts of central and southern Utah by the National Weather Service for Thursday from noon to 9 p.m.

Affected area

West-central, southwest and south-central Utah, Utah’s Dixie including Zion National Park, the Glen Canyon Recreation Area and the San Rafael Swell.

This include the cities of Green River, Hanksville, Delta, Fillmore, Beaver, Cedar City, Milford, St George, Kanab, Escalante and Bullfrog

Winds and timing

Winds are anticipated to reach 25-35 mph with gusts to 50 mph.

The wind will increase late Thursday morning, becoming strong and gusty by the afternoon.

Winds will decrease Thursday evening while also turning northwesterly across west-central and southwest Utah.

Impacts

Crosswinds may affect travel along east-west routes such as Highway 50 across western Utah, Highway 89 across far southern Utah, I-70 across the San Rafael Swell and portions of I-15 across southwest Utah.

Reduced visibility may be occur in blowing dust.

Precautionary and preparedness actions

A wind advisory means that sustained wind speeds of at least 31 mph or gusts of 45 mph are expected.

Motorists in the advisory area should be prepared for sudden gusty crosswinds which can make driving difficult.
