ST. GEORGE—As the fall semester gets underway, Southern Utah residents can join students in sharpening their minds by attending Dixie State University’s weekly lecture series “Dixie Forum: A Window on the World.” The series kicks off for the semester Tuesday with a presentation by DOCUTAH officials at noon in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Resource Center on the DSU campus. Admission is free for everyone.
Tuesday’s forum will feature DOCUTAH Executive Director Christina Schultz offering an overview of the international film festival that is presented by Dixie State University. Additionally, artistic director Phil Tuckett, who was vice president of NFL Films for 38 years and has won 30 Emmy awards, will talk about some of the specific films being screened this year; Kristin Hunt, DOCUTAH seminars coordinator, will offer information about filmmaker seminars; and Lani Puriri, DOCUTAH operations manger, will share details about DOCUTAH scholarships for DSU students.
The festival received accolades from PBS as one of the best small town film festivals, and Movie Maker Magazine named it one of the 25 coolest film festivals in the world. Since debuting in 2010, DOCUTAH has received more than 1,100 film submissions from more than 70 countries.
The festival strives to inspire a global connection through documentary films and intellectual discussions. In doing so, DOCUTAH enhances the education of DSU students and southern Utah residents.
Dixie Forum is a lecture series designed to introduce the St. George community and DSU students, faculty and staff to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. Students can earn one college credit by signing up for HUM 1000, attending lectures regularly, carefully considering the ideas expressed and writing about the presentations.
The weekly series will continue its 2014 fall semester slate on Tuesday, Sept. 2, with the presentation “Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill (2010) in the Gulf of Mexico: A Reminder About Oil Pollution in the Ocean” by Dr. John Farrington, dean emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
