Georgia Johnson

Nov. 28, 1942-Dec. 15, 2022

Local artist, Georgia Johnson, beautiful, caring wife, mother and grandmother passed away on Dec. 15, 2022. She lost her two-year battle with cancer at her home in St. George, Utah, at the age of 80.

Georgia grew up and attended high school in Bell Gardens, California. After graduation she attended cosmetology school in Los Angles. She went on to own and operate, in partnership, salons in LaHabra and Whittier, California, for the next 30 years. Georgia moved to St. George in 1994 where she met her second husband and lived until her death.

Georgia was known for her beautiful smile, outgoing personality and love for adventure. She was an accomplished golfer, enjoyed dancing and loved water skiing on the Colorado River and Lake Powell. She never turned down an opportunity to camp or travel in her beloved Southern Utah and enjoyed touring the U.S. and several international countries.

During retirement, she became a recognized local artist with her whimsical ravens and rabbits along with her unique pottery with manzanita handles. Her work was displayed in several local galleries. She was a strong supporter of expanding the art community in St. George. Friends and family knew they could discuss their problems with her, and she was quick to offer whatever help she could to friends in need. The world needs more Georgias.

Georgia is survived by her husband Richard Johnson; daughters Marcy Spears, Pomona, California, and Jennifer Deal and her husband Dean, Diamond Bar, California; granddaughter Madison Spears, Santa Cruz, California; and grandson Shade Spears and his wife Katie, Fontana, California. She was preceded in death by her first husband David Colley, her parents Philip and Georgia Novak and brother Philip “Jim” Novak.

Georgia will be honored by a Celebration of Life ceremony planned at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta Art Village, Ivins, Utah on Monday, Jan. 30, from 3-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please support a local artist.
