Drive to the market for cigarettes ends in 2-car crash on Mall Drive

ST. GEORGE — A man intending to take a quick drive around the block to buy cigarettes was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Mall Drive Wednesday night in St. George.

The driver of a black Ford F-150 pickup truck told St. George News he was on Mall Drive heading to Lin’s Market for some cigarettes. He said he was positioned in the turn lane, motionless, awaiting a break in oncoming traffic so he could turn left into the parking lot.

As he waited and watched, he said, an oncoming black Chevy Malibu passenger vehicle struck the front end of the truck, pushing it back several feet.

The crash occurred at 2891 E. Mall Drive, where the vehicles remained for about 40 minutes while police spoke with the drivers involved and emergency personnel cleared the scene.

A St. George police department cruiser, a Washington County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle and an engine from St. George Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after 6 p.m.

The driver said that to his knowledge, no one went to the hospital, although he said he had a banged-up knee.

In a text to St. George News, St. George Police officer Tiffany Mitchell confirmed that both vehicles in the collision were towed away and all patients refused transport to the hospital.

This report is based on statements by witnesses and police personnel and may not include the full scope of the findings.
