WASHINGTON CITY —Ever wanted your front porch to look better than your neighbors’ but don’t have the time or the eye for design? Keep calm, and let The It Girls do it for you.
Mother Debbie Sargent and her daughter Mackenzie Roberts have combined their talent and passion into a budding business, offering everything from front porch decor to interior design and organization. And the sense of calm and beauty is spreading to homes across Washington County, one decorated space at a time.
“I honestly did not think that something as simple as decorating a porch for a holiday would be something everybody wanted,” said Roberts, adding she inherited her talents from her mother, who always had a talent for interior design.
Growing up, Roberts’ home was extremely organized and decorated beautifully, something she has taken into her own home as an adult. When the pair moved to St. George from Salt Lake City in January, Sargent said she was ready to take her passion for design and organization, a service she had provided for many people over the years, and turn it into a full-time business.
“I finally became an empty nester and this was something I really wanted to pursue,” Sargent said. “I can put my energy into helping others achieve the home they want.”
The businesses picked up unexpectedly when they decorated their individual porches for the fall season, something they each do every year. They posted their completed designs on social media, and that’s when Roberts said it “instantly blew up.” Friends and family flooded their Facebook feed and inboxes with inquiries, wanting their porches done for fall, Christmas and other seasons.
“We had so many people interested in it, which was crazy. I couldn’t believe how much it took off,” Sargent said.
Added Roberts: “If we already have friends and family wanting to do it, why not offer it to everyone else?”
The It Girls was born, offering a variety of package options for fall doorstep decor, which were posted on a variety of local Facebook pages.
The first package, designed for those who prefer a simple design, features a few pumpkins, a fall doormat and a fall wreath. The second package offers a step above, with a wreath doormat, fall signs and additional fall decor.
The most extensive package is a combination of the first two packages, along with a variety of decor added such as fall pillows, bringing the design together in a big way.
All packages include a front porch powerwash in order to start with a clean slate, as well as cleanup and removal of perishable items such as pumpkins at the end of the season. Customers are able to keep all decor provided.
Roberts and Sargent are excited to extend their business to interior design and exterior design such as backyards, along with home organization, something they both have a passion for.
The It Girls offers free home consultations for individual room designs and full interior designs, including wallpaper, along with home organization of closets, pantries, utensil drawers and more. Organization bins customers already have can be utilized, or containers can be provided. Labels are available to match each customer’s individual organization needs.
“We try to stay within a budget because bins can get pricey,” Sargent said. “Bins can range from the Dollar Store to crate and barrel prices, so we stay affordable.”
The pair has loved the opportunity to start and run a business together. Their individual eye for design compliments each project they take on, making them a great team.
Mother and daughter are excited to see where the business takes them and are thankful for the opportunity to meet new people in the area while creating designs they love.
Design options with The It Girls also extend to special events such as weddings, birthday parties and more. To contact The It Girls directly for your decor needs, visit their Facebook page.
