Failure to yield causes 3-car collision at busy St. George intersection; 2 drivers go to hospital

ST. GEORGE — Traffic through one of St. George’s busiest intersections was slowed for about an hour Tuesday afternoon after a three-car collision at River Road and Foremaster Drive.

St. George Fire Department, St. George Police Department and Gold Cross Ambulance personnel all responded to the scene around 3:20 p.m.

St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News that a black Kia was southbound on River Road in the left turn lane waiting to turn onto Foremaster Drive.

Mitchell said a black BMW at the same time was northbound on River Road going straight through the intersection on a green light.

Mitchell said that the driver of the Kia failed to yield during a left turn and the passenger vehicle was struck by the oncoming BMW. The Kia then spun and struck the front end of a red Toyota Corolla, whose driver was waiting in the turn lane on Foremaster.

The Kia driver, Mitchell said, was a 17-year-old male who complained of burns from the airbag but was self-transported to the hospital.

Mitchell added that the driver of the BMW was transported to St. George Regional Hospital via ambulance for treatment of challenged breathing and burns from the airbag.

Mitchell said in accidents like this, when airbags deploy, the chemicals on the airbags sometimes cause burns.

Mitchell said that the third driver, in the red Toyota, was a teen male who was uninjured along with three passengers. He was able to drive the Toyota safely away from the scene.

Both the Kia and the BMW were towed, said Mitchell, adding that the driver of the Kia was cited for failing to yield during a left turn.

This report is based on statements by police personnel and may not include the full scope of the findings.
