ST. GEORGE β€” Authorities are counting speed as the primary factor in a crash by a roundabout on Snow Canyon Parkway in Ivins Monday evening that had a person stuck in their car due to worries of electrocution.

Around 6:10 p.m., Santa Clara-Ivins first responders were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash involving a Nissan Versa that had collided with an electrical utility box. The Nissan, which had been eastbound on Snow Canyon Parkway, crashed into the power box with enough force to rip the box off its foundation and pull several still-live power lines with it.

β€œThe power in the box did not disconnect after being hit,” Santa Clara-Ivins Police Sgt. Reed Briggs said.

As the crash happened at the roundabout near the incoming Black Desert Resort development, construction workers saw the crash and called 911, Briggs said. They also told the driver of the Nissan, who was uninjured, to stay in their car until the power to the electrical lines under it could be shut off.

The construction workers had seen power arcing from the lines and warned that trying to get out at that point posed a potential risk of electrocution, Briggs said.

The driver stayed put as emergency responders from the Santa Clara-Ivins Police and Fire departments began to arrive at the scene.

While authorities dealt with the scene and waited for a crew from Rocky Mountain Power to arrive and shut off power to exposed lines, traffic was reduced to a single lane moving into and through the roundabout until it cleared the crash scene.

Power to the electrical lines eventually was shut off after around 45 minutes. The driver finally was able to get out of the car and checked for any injuries by waiting medics.

An estimated $2,500 in damage was caused to the power box and electrical lines with another $2,500 done to the Nissan Versa, Briggs said. The Nissan was subsequently towed away and the driver was cited for speeding and failing to stay in their lane.

This is not the first time a crash of this nature has happened in that area, Briggs said. For some reason people believe they can speed through the roundabout with no problem, only to end up running off the road and crashing into something.

Though the speed limit on Snow Canyon Parkway may be 40 mph, people still need to slow down when going through the roundabout, Briggs said.
