CEDAR CITY — A single-car rollover indirectly caused a three-vehicle collision after a driver rear-ended a sedan while preparing to move around slowing traffic Monday afternoon.

At approximately 1:53 p.m, Utah Highway Patrol responded to reports of a rollover near mile marker 92 on Interstate 15. A Honda Civic was traveling southbound when its tire blew out. UHP Sgt. Bambie Baie said the driver overcorrected and rolled the vehicle.

A Chevrolet Suburban was approaching the area as traffic was slowing down. The driver reportedly looked left to see if she could pass and rear-ended a Honda Accord, which was pushed into the front tire of a Ford F150. Both the Accord and the F150 came to a stop in the median and the Suburban came to rest on the right shoulder, Baie said.

The two occupants of the Civic were transported to the hospital in a Gold Cross Ambulance with minor injuries and reportedly are in good condition.

Baie said that the vehicles in the subsequent crash were all single-occupant and no injuries were reported.

No citations were issued at the scene, and the incident remains under investigation, Baie said. UHP received reports of a reckless driver traveling at a high rate of speed while weaving in and out of traffic, which may have been a contributing factor in the secondary collision.

To avoid rollovers caused by tire blowouts, Baie said to ease off the gas rather than slam on the brakes, emphasizing the importance and slowly reducing speed.

“A lot of people – it frightens them, justifiably so,” she said. “It makes them nervous and so they overreact. And that slamming on the brakes or evasive movement on the steering wheel is what contributes to a lot of the rollovers.”

Additionally, Baie suggests individuals take steps to ensure their equipment is in good shape, especially while the area is experiencing high temperatures.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Department, Parowan Police Department, Paragonah Fire Department and Parowan Fire Department also responded to the call.
