“The roof was an entire loss. The upstairs has about 50 to 70% damage from fire and water,” Cedar City Fire Department Captain Lowell Sorensen said. “The lower would be probably 25% damage to the rest of the house.”
The home fire alarms alerted the residents to the flames. Cedar City and Southern Utah University Police arrived on the scene quickly, Sorensen said.
The fire started in the attic and the cause is still under investigation. No other nearby homes were threatened and no injuries were reported, according to Sorensen.
Late Saturday morning, family members were observed gathering salvageable belongings from inside the home and placing them in the back of a pickup truck. Although displaced by the fire, they told Cedar City News they did have a place to stay.
