Direct sunlight alleged cause of collision in St. George

ST. GEORGE — Bright sunlight affecting a driver at a St. George intersection may have caused a two-vehicle collision Tuesday morning.

St. George Police officer Trevor Anderson told St. George News that at 9 a.m., a Chevy was westbound in the left lane on 100 South and a Ford Focus was eastbound in the left turn lane, trying to turn north onto 1000 East. He said the traffic light was green for both eastbound and westbound lanes.

When the driver of the Ford Focus attempted to make a right-hand turn eastbound on 100 North, turning onto 1000 East, the female juvenile driver allegedly had the sun in her eyes.

“She didn’t see the oncoming westbound vehicle in the left lane,” Anderson said

Anderson cautioned drivers to take extra time when they are in direct sunlight in an intersection.

“I can tell you it’s a crappy situation, especially right when there’s sun in your eyes,” Anderson said. “You have to take that extra second just to ensure that there’s nothing in that blind spot before you go if there’s any blind spot caused by the sun.”

The Chevy driver was a male and that his passengers were his wife and several children. None of the parties involved were injured other than cuts and scrapes. The St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance also responded.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
