ST. GEORGE — Firefighters responded to a backyard fire in the area of state Route 18 near mile marker 15 after receiving a report of a developing smoke column on the north side of Diamond Valley.

According to a Facebook post by Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue, just after 1 p.m. Monday, Engine 131 and Battalion 131 were dispatched to the site, and upon arrival, crews found a fire in the backyard of a residence and stretched fire attack lines to suppress and contain the fire.

They were successful in keeping the fire contained before it could spread to structures or surrounding vegetation, the post said.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the fire, the cause of which is currently under investigation.

Because wildfire risk continues to be elevated in the region, Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue recommends becoming familiar with the current Stage 1 fire restrictions and calling 911 to report fire or smoke immediately, the post said.
