CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — As we have just gathered to celebrate Flag Day and the Fourth of July, it’s essential to remember the true essence of these occasions: honoring the brave men and women who have served our country. Our veterans, who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms, deserve our deepest gratitude and unwavering support.

At The Retreat at Sunbrook and The Retreat at Sunriver Assisted Living and Memory Care, we are dedicated to providing just that.

Flag Day, observed on June 14, commemorates the adoption of the stars and stripes as the official flag of the United States. This day reminds us of the values our flag represents – liberty, justice and unity. Similarly, the Fourth of July marks the birth of our nation, celebrating the Declaration of Independence and the enduring spirit of freedom that defines America.

The service rendered by our veterans has shaped the course of our nation’s history. From the trenches of World War I to the deserts of the Middle East, these courageous individuals have faced unimaginable challenges to safeguard our way of life. Their sacrifices, often involving significant physical, emotional and mental tolls, underscore the price of freedom.

As a community, it is our responsibility to ensure that the contributions of these heroes are never forgotten. By actively remembering and honoring their service, we affirm the values they fought to protect and pass on a legacy of gratitude and respect to future generations.

One of the most meaningful ways we can show our appreciation is by helping veterans in the final stages of their lives live fulfilled and exciting lives. The Retreats at Sunbrook and Sunriver, along with our volunteers, dedicate our time and resources to providing veterans and residents with enriching experiences, whether through social activities, travel opportunities or simply offering companionship and a listening ear.

These initiatives are not just about adding days to their lives but adding life to their days. By engaging veterans and residents in meaningful activities and ensuring they feel valued, we help them maintain their dignity and quality of life.

As we celebrate Flag Day and the Fourth of July, let us also take a moment to reflect on the enduring impact of our veterans’ service. Join us in reaching out to local veterans’ organizations, participating in community events or simply thanking a veteran for their service. Every gesture of appreciation helps build a supportive and grateful community.

In honoring our veterans, we honor the very ideals that make our nation great. Let’s ensure their sacrifices are remembered and that they live their final years knowing their contributions are cherished.

Happy Flag Day and Fourth of July to all, and a heartfelt thank you to our veterans. Your bravery and dedication are the bedrock of our freedom, and we are forever grateful.
