CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Do you have an ancient air conditioner? The chill seekers at S&S Mechanical are on the hunt for Iron County’s oldest working A/C unit, and the winning homeowner will receive a brand-new Carrier system absolutely free.

Even if you don’t have the winning unit, however, S&S Mechanical still wants to help you stay cool through these scorching summer days. That’s why the company is also giving every qualifying entrant a free year’s worth of A/C maintenance.

“We’ve been looking for a way to give back,” owner Cory Pincock said. “We’re hoping to help somebody that maybe isn’t in a position to replace their old air conditioner even though they really need to.”

Submissions will be accepted through the end of August; click here to fill out the entry form. Participants are also required to follow S&S Mechanical on Facebook, Instagram or both.

To qualify, a unit must be at least 10 years old with a sticker showing an intact serial number that will be legible in the submitted photo(s). S&S Mechanical will visit the winner’s home to verify the age and operating condition of their A/C.

The contest is open to homeowners residing within S&S Mechanical’s Iron County service area. Participants must be at least 21 years old and consent to sharing their personal information with the company, including their name, address, phone number and email address.

“It’s going to be fun to see some of these air conditioners that are really old, ones that shouldn’t still be running but somehow are,” Pincock said.

The free year’s worth of maintenance includes a precision tune-up from an expert S&S Mechanical technician that will help your aging A/C keep working as efficiently as possible. So even if you don’t think you have the winning unit, it’s still worth participating.

S&S Mechanical will be heading south later this summer to find the oldest working A/C in Washington County, so stay tuned if you’re in St. George.

“We’re hoping to make this a tradition,” Pincock said.

A/C units last about 20 years on average, but Pincock said S&S Mechanical technicians occasionally encounter units that were installed 30 years ago or even longer. Life expectancy will vary based upon the type of system, and some homeowners choose to upgrade their existing unit before it begins experiencing age-related problems to enjoy greater efficiency and energy savings.

Homeowners can help keep their A/C system running smoothly through the years with regular maintenance. Most manufacturers recommend scheduling a service call at least once every 12 months to clean critical components, replace filters, check fluids, evaluate overall operation and take proactive measures to maximize efficiency and longevity.

Worn-out parts and filters clogged by dust and debris make units work harder to cool a home. Without routine service, it’s estimated that efficiency declines by 5% every year. This reduced efficiency results in higher utility bills and less indoor comfort.

The experts at S&S Mechanical, a factory-authorized dealer of residential HVAC products from Carrier, provide quality installation and repairs of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Their certified technicians cover all of Washington and Iron counties and are ready to respond 24/7 for emergency repairs.

Locally operated since 1983, the company is committed to fostering customer loyalty through unmatched value and service.

“The majority of our customers are return customers because of how we treat them,” Pincock said. “We treat them like we treat our family, and our team is a big family. I think they feel that sentiment and know that we’re going to be fair, we’re going to be honest and we’ll get the job done right.”
