Region 9 girls golf: Crimson Cliffs edges Cedar by 1 stroke to begin season

ST. GEORGE — Region 9’s high school girls golf season teed off on Thursday with a nine-hole round at Dixie Red Hills Golf Course.

Led by sophomore Kate Walker’s 1-over score of 36, the Crimson Cliffs Mustangs posted a team score of 179, edging runner-up Cedar by a single stroke. RaeLee Johnson led the Reds with a 37, the second-best score of the day. 

The match was played in blustery conditions, with darkening clouds mixed with brisk, chilly winds.

The Pine View Panthers, last year’s 4A state champions, placed third overall and posted a team score of 187 on Thursday. Senior Alyssa Butterfus’s 41 paced the Panthers, with teammate Matti Wieland adding a 43.

Although that first match was nine holes only, the season’s remaining contests are all scheduled for a full 18 holes. Following is the weekly Region 9 schedule, with the usual starting tee time between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The seven Region 9 teams will take turns hosting a weekly match:

  7. April 30, Sand Hollow Resort, Hurricane.
