CEDAR CITY — Police in Cedar City arrested a man on Wednesday after he allegedly threatened his roommate with a power drill.
Jayson Jade McDonald, 30, was booked into Iron County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault, obstructing justice, disorderly conduct and failing to stop at the command of police.
It marked McDonald’s second arrest in as many weeks. He was also taken into police custody following an incident the evening of Feb. 21, when officers were called to an address on Spruce Street on a report of “a male screaming at his family and breaking things with a hammer.”
According to charging documents filed in connection with that case, McDonald allegedly threatened officers and fought them as they were attempting to take him into custody. He was subsequently charged with four counts of assault on a peace officer and two counts of propelling a bodily substance (spitting), all class A misdemeanors, as well as one count of interfering with an arrest, a class B misdemeanor. McDonald was released from jail a few days later, after posting a $1,500 bail bond.
In last week’s incident, police responded to the same address on a report that a shirtless man holding a Ryobi power drill was seen chasing another man down the street and allegedly threatening to kill him.
Responding officers initially found McDonald inside a car, holding a drill. However, he ignored their commands and went inside his residence and refused to come back out, according to the probable cause affidavit.
The affidavit also notes that due to McDonald’s prior violent confrontation with police, Iron County Metro SWAT officers were called in to respond.
After being given multiple commands to come outside, McDonald eventually exited the residence and was safely taken into custody without further incident, the affidavit states.
As of Friday morning, McDonald, who is being held without bail in Iron County Jail, has not yet made an initial appearance on the latest charges, which include two third-degree felony counts, namely obstruction of justice and aggravated assault. His next scheduled court appearance in the earlier case is a waiver hearing on March 19 before 5th District Judge Ann Marie McIff Allen.
