CEDAR CITY — The Southern Utah University football community is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievement of Miles Killebrew, former Thunderbird standout and current Pittsburgh Steeler, for being selected to this year’s National Football League Pro Bowl.
Killebrew’s journey from the Thunderbirds to the NFL has been marked by exceptional talent and constant improvement.
Drafted in 2016 as the 111th overall pick by the Detroit Lions, Killebrew set the precedent as the university’s highest-drafted player in school history.
“Killebrew’s Pro Bowl recognition alongside seasoned teammates T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick highlight his exceptional skill set and the respect he commands within the league,” Southern Utah University said in a press release. “Congratulations, Miles Killebrew, on this well-deserved honor from all of us at Southern Utah University.”
During his tenure at SUU, Killebrew etched his name in T-Birds’ history, amassing over 100 tackles in consecutive seasons and earning All-Big Sky Recognition throughout his four-year college career. His leadership was instrumental in the team’s first Big Sky Conference Championship title in 2015.
In his current season with the Steelers, Killebrew’s leadership on special teams has been nothing short of stellar.
Garnering his first Pro Bowl selection in his eighth NFL season, Killebrew’s impact shines with two blocked punts this year, adding to an impressive career tally of four. Additionally, he leads the Steelers with 13 special teams tackles this season.
According to the Pittsburgh Steelers website, Killebrew has been voted to the Pro Bowl Games as a starter on special teams.
Killebrew, who is the Steelers’ special teams captain, has blocked three punts since signing with the Steelers in 2021, tied for the most by any team, not just players, in the NFL since that time, and four blocked punts in his career.
Killebrew also leads the Steelers with 13 special teams tackles — including 11 solo stops. He blocked a punt against the Baltimore Ravens that went out of the endzone for a safety in a game the Steelers won, 17-10.
In another game, Killebrew did not get credited with a blocked punt against the New England Patriots, since the ball went past the line of scrimmage, but his impact on the play was felt by Pats fans just the same.
Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and linebacker T.J. Watt will Killebrew representing the black and gold in the Pro Bowl Games, which took on a new format in 2022. Killebrew and Watt were both voted in as starters.
