Incumbent Jarett Waite, the leading vote-getter in November, was also sworn-in for his second term in office.
The chambers at Santa Clara Town Hall were mostly full, including many members of Santa Clara-Ivins Fire and Rescue and their chief, Andrew Parker.
Pond and Burton had touted their election platform to slow growth and development in the city. But Pond, an IT manager in his day job, told St. George News it wouldn’t be fair to describe them as “anti-development.”
“I think the the better term is is responsible development,” Pond said. “You’re never going to stop growth. It’s just a matter of doing it in a responsible manner that that enhances the community and doesn’t take away from it.”
Burton, a former member of the state Republican committiee and current Ms. Senior Utah USA, said she continues to be overwhelmed by the grassroots, write-in effort that got her into office. And that wasn’t any different when she took her place on the other side of the dias.
She expressed excitement at researching her first assignments as a councilperson and said she was in “learning mode.”
“As a lifetime learner, you realize that the more you get to know, the more you know that you don’t know,” Burton said. “So that’s important to know that I have a lot to learn, but I’m excited about the learning and excited to put my best foot forward.”
