ST. GEORGE — A man was killed when his SUV flew off Interstate 15 just south of Cedar City on Friday morning.

The vehicle hit a horse trailer on the Exit 51 offramp and rolled over, ejecting the driver. There were no other injuries in the crash that for much of the morning closed the offramp leading to Old Highway 91 and the Cedar Bend Travel Plaza.

Authorities said the man was from California and in his 20s. He was the only passenger in the SUV and was traveling south around 9 a.m. on I-15 when he reportedly overcorrected.

“He was on the main flow of I-15, went across both lanes of travel and went airborne,” Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Clay Allred told Cedar City News. “It was a weird accident.”

Allred said the vehicle then flew onto the Exit 51 offramp and hit a horse trailer. Then as the vehicle rolled over, its occupant was ejected.

“We attempted life-saving measures. An ambulance arrived as well as an air ambulance, but attempts were unsuccessful to revive him,” Allred said.

Allred said he couldn’t speculate whether the man was wearing a seat belt. He added there were no injuries to the driver of the horse trailer or to the horse inside.

Authorities stayed in the vicinity of the crash for an investigation that is still ongoing. Allred said road conditions or weather were not contributing factors.
