4 Southern Utah music teachers march in Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade

ST. GEORGE — Four local music teachers will be marching in the 2023 Macy’s Parade on Thanksgiving morning in New York City.

According to a news release from the Washington County School District, the quartet will be part of the Band Directors Marching Band, which features 400 band directors and educators from across the country.

The four teachers are Hayley Winslow from Snow Canyon Middle School, Jared Nicholson from Crimson Cliffs Middle School and Audrey Wood and Michael Winslow from Sunrise Ridge Intermediate School. Winslow is the assistant principal of Sunrise Ridge.

According to the press release, “The Saluting America’s Band Directors parade entry will again convey its theme, ‘America’s band directors: We teach music. We teach life.’ to recognize the extraordinary dedication and accomplishments of band directors and music educators everywhere.”

The band will be directed by nationally known music educator and innovative band director Jon Waters, the news release said. The sponsoring organization behind this project is the Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation, based in Pickerington, Ohio. The foundation was created to recognize and carry on the work of the late Sewell, who dedicated his life to the school and community music programs in Pickerington and the Central Ohio area for almost 40 years.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be shown on NBC and the Peacock streaming service from 8:30 a.m.- noon in all time zones. However, the actual parade will start at 8:30 a.m. EST.

According to NBC, an encore airing of the parade will also begin at 2 p.m. on NBC.
