For the past 15 years, Tonia Tewell has worked against human trafficking. As the executive director of Holding Out Help (short for helping, encouraging and loving polygamists), a Draper-based nonprofit that provides resources to individuals leaving polygamy, Tewell and her team have assisted over 2,700 clients as they transition out of polygamist communities, according to a press release issued by the organization.
This year, Holding Out Help’s fall fundraiser will be held in St. George for the first time. The Nov. 17 event will focus on the various forms of human trafficking occurring within some polygamist communities.
The event aims to raise money to continue providing safe housing, educational support and trauma recovery services, all offered at no cost to individuals and families transitioning out of polygamy.
The event will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at South Mountain Community Church. Presentations will be given by law enforcement, trafficking survivors and other industry experts. Audience members will be given a chance to ask questions during a live Q&A with a panel of experts. Dessert will be provided, and attire is business casual.
Ed. note: When making charitable contributions it is advisable to consult with professionals for tax advice and investment risks.
