ST. GEORGE — Heavy rains left the road leading to the St. George Regional Airport from the Southern Parkway flooded over Wednesday evening.

Flooding across Airport Parkway was reported over social media by the St. George Police Department shortly after 6 p.m.

It was initially reported that the airport was closed due to the flooding, which David Cordero, a spokesman for the city of St. George, later confirmed to be incorrect and possibly a result of miscommunication. The original social media post has since been deleted.

Weather nonetheless did impact travel into the airport as some flights were delayed – up to two hours in one instance – yet arrived safely at their destination.

Going to and from the airport by car was also impacted due to the flooding across Airport Parkway.

However, the road remained open as airport personnel on one side of the flood and police on the other side helped guide motorists across the submerged road by directing them to drive across its highest point, Cordero said.

A segment of the road remained flooded over as of 8:56 p.m., though not to the same degree as it was when originally reported, according to a Utah Department of Transportation camera feed set up nearby.

Even with the aid of the airport personnel and police officers on scene, motorists are still advised to exercise caution around flooded roadways. A general rule emphasized by road officials and law enforcement agencies when dealing with flooded roads is “turn around, don’t drown.”
