While constructing the 53-acre Zion Utah Jellystone Park Resort, a great deal of money has been spent in blasting due to the property sitting on a lava shelf in the Hurricane Valley, owner Scott Nielson said.

“We’ve spent over a million dollars in blasting,” Nielson said about the lava rock. “We’ve blasted trenches. We’ve blasted for mass excavation, and what it’s done is created some massive boulders, bigger than vehicles and cars to smaller stuff, and they’ve proven to be really good for retaining walls.”

Nielson added that many developers and excavators have come to the property to purchase and haul off the rock for various uses, including landscaping and dirt retention. Not only can the rocks be used the way they are, but they also can be stained in a variety of colors to create a specific look for different projects.

For rock already repurposed on the Zion Utah Jellystone Park Resort property, Nielson said his crew has mixed different concrete acid stains to change the color and appearance for various landscaping projects.

“What we do is spray them with the stain and then we don’t do anything to neutralize the chemical reaction,” he added. “So the chemical goes in there and it changes color. You can stain these pretty much anything you want – browns, grays, blacks and they’re really, really pretty.”

Some of the repurposed rock used for the park’s landscaping includes massive rock walls towering as high as 60 feet. Once the rock walls were in place, crews painted the rock with a dark ebony stain to create the finished product.

“We’re just trying to create awareness for those looking for this, such as homeowners, developers, excavators and anyone who needs landscape or beautification for their yards or retention walls,” Nielson said. “These are perfect for that.”

For purchasing parties, they’re discounting the rock price down to $22 a ton. And Nielson said his company is able to load dump trucks, trailers and more with their on-site excavator, making the buying process easy.

“We’ve probably got over 4 acres of rock and a couple of million dollars’ worth of rock for sale,” he added. “People that are in need or are searching for this type of material for their house or their project development – we’ve got it.”

As far as the construction of Zion Utah Jellystone Park Resort, Nielson said it’s approaching the home stretch and he’s excited to soon showcase the park to the world. Located just north of Sand Hollow State Park, he plans for the resort to be the perfect place for families to have the vacation of a lifetime. Whether you’re splashing in their Water Zone, floating down the Lazy River, enjoying the Splash Pad or taking in the gorgeous scenery from your RV site or cabin, it’s bound to be a memorable experience.

Through Nielson Development, Nielson has built over 250 residential housing projects in Utah, North Dakota and Hawaii. Nielson managed and operated the Nielson RV chain of dealerships simultaneously with his development company, then sold the residential arm to Solaris Development in 2017. His sole focus now is now on subdivision and resort development projects. Follow the progress of Zion Utah Jellystone Park Resort on social media and the park’s website.
